Accessing personalised mental health and wellbeing support

Important information for all students before completing the registration form with our Mental Health and Wellbeing service:

Please be aware that allocations to our service are high and we may not be in the position to offer you face to face counselling or wellbeing services until the end of term.

The following services are available to support you:

Should you wish to register with Mental Health and Wellbeing please provide as much availability as possible so that we can try to allocate you as quickly as possible. We have appointments available from 08:30 – 15:30 Monday - Friday and evening appointments up to 18:30 on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

If you decide that you no longer wish to access our Mental Health and Wellbeing service or you feel your mental health is deteriorating, please remember that you can access support from your GP.

Your GP can also refer you to Forward Thinking Birmingham up to 25 years old, or if you are over 25, Birmingham Healthy Minds. Please note that you can also refer yourself to Forward Thinking Birmingham and Birmingham Healthy Minds.

Next steps

Once you have registered with our service we will communicate with you via your student email address, as we know this will be secure and confidential.

Once we have assessed your needs, we will offer you an appropriate service. This could be a two session workshop, a two session consultation, or a series of short-term one-to-one sessions with a Wellbeing Practitioner or Counsellor.

Missed or cancelled appointments

To ensure we can see you as quickly as possible, and to avoid wasted appointments and unncessary delays, we implement a missed or cancelled appointments policy.

If you need to cancel your apointment please call the Student Services Support Team on 0121 414 5130, email studenthelp@contacts.bham.ac.uk or email your counsellor or wellbeing practitioner.

Our policy:

  • If you miss an appointment without letting us know and do not contact us within 48 hours after the appointment time, we may close your case. We will tell you if we do this. If you then tell us you wish to continue, we will review your case and may put you back onto our waiting list.
  • If you cancel two appointments without giving us 24 hours notice, we may close your case. We may put you back onto our waiting list if you contact us again.
  • If you cancel or miss an appointment, it will usually count towards the total number of sessions we can offer you.
