The University is here to support you throughout your studies – no matter the extent to which you might be suffering, we believe that you shouldn’t have to tackle it alone, and we have a variety of resources in place to make sure that you’re getting the most out of your time at university.

The following services are part of the University or Guild and are here to support your mental health and wellbeing throughout your time as a student.

UBHeard 24/7 Mental Health Support

UBheard is a confidential listening and support service for all registered students (undergraduate and postgraduate) that gives you immediate emotional and mental health support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Call the service now on 0800 368 5819 (Freephone UK*) or 00353 1 518 0277 (International), or visit the UBHeard portal (you can easily create an account with your UoB email address). Pause Mental Health Drop-In Sessions

Pause drop-in sessions are available on campus and offer listening services, support and brief interventions from trained practitioners. They also host craft afternoons and other wellbeing activities and have free snacks available.

Wellbeing Officer

Each School has their own Wellbeing Officer(s), who can provide practical and emotional support for you if you are experiencing personal problems, particularly when these might interfere with your academic work. They can recommend sources of professional help and, if appropriate, will guide you through the extenuating circumstances process.

Student Disability Service

If your mental or physical health is impacting your studying and you need support then contact the Student Disability Service can offer you further support throughout your time at the University of Birmingham. This may involve developing an individual Reasonable Adjustments Plan, to ensure that you’re able to fully access teaching, learning, exams and other assessments. They can also help you explore if a specialist mentor could assist you during your studies.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Service

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Service is staffed by a team of experienced and qualified Practitioners who can provide therapeutic support to you whilst you are studying at University of Birmingham. We work with students for up to 5 sessions each academic year concentrating on the issues that are causing you the most distress.

NHS Self Help Guides – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Self-help guides can be an excellent option for those concerned about their mental health. Our self-help guides have been written by clinical psychologists and provide suggestions for simple ways in which you can begin to make positive changes, tailored to a wide variety of issues.

The guides are accessible, easy to use and relatively short (20-30 pages).  Each guide is also available as an audio file – you may find listening an easier way to access the materials, especially if you are finding it hard to concentrate on written materials.

LGBTQ Wellbeing Drop-In

LGBTQ Wellbeing Drop-In is provided by the team at Birmingham LGBT Centre Birmingham LGBT - Supporting Birmingham's LGBTQ+ Community (blgbt.org). The centre provides a whole range of LGBTQ+ specialist support including groups and social activities as well as specialist counselling, wellbeing and sexual health Services - Birmingham LGBT (blgbt.org).

At the drop in on campus you can chat about any wellbeing issues you are experiencing and hear about any relevant services or groups at the Centre that you might find useful. You can also access rapid sexual health testing if required. 

UBSport Wellness Service (exercise, nutrition and/or meditation)

The UBSport Wellness service aims to help those students who are currently experiencing psychological difficulties, who would benefit from support in the areas of Exercise, Nutrition, and/or Meditation. This support will be offered on a one-to-one basis, and may include follow up sessions if required. We welcome anyone seeking support, irrespective of their connection to the Gym. Our ethos is to encourage a generally more observant state of being, irrespective of the activity being carried out.

Guild of Students

Guild Advice is a free, impartial and confidential advice service for students at the University of Birmingham they specialise in the following issues: Academic, Housing, Finance, International Support and Wellbeing. You can also find 100s of Student Groups and meet the Officer Team - Guild of Students

Multi-Faith Chaplaincy

The Multi-faith Chaplaincy offers an inclusive space for prayer, meditation, relaxation and worship, among many other activities. All students are welcome to visit, regardless of whether you’re religious or not.       

Community Safety Team

The Community Safety Team is here to look out for you on campus. We do this in many ways – patrolling the grounds, following up reports from students and staff, and through our new drop-in service at the Community Safety Hub.

Better than Well Campus Recovery Programme (Addiction support)

Better Than Well  is designed to support students who are in recovery from any form of addiction while they study at the University of Birmingham. Run by students and coordinated by an academic addiction psychiatrist and a recent graduate student in long-term recovery, the programme offers peer-to-peer support, social events and weekly meetings for students wishing to maintain abstinence-based recovery. 

University Security

The Security team is here to offer expert help, support, and advice, 24 hours a day, all year round. We are here for everyone – students, staff and local residents - and work to keep you safe in many ways, from responding to situations and patrolling campus, to managing vehicle barriers and planning for emergencies.  You’ll recognise us out and about with our 'Security’ navy blue uniforms on. We’re a friendly bunch, and here to lend an ear should you wish to talk about anything.
