Supervisor approvals

Supervisors will normally be academic members of staff at the University of Birmingham and hold appropriate qualifications and supervisory experience to support the PGR effectively. However, in exceptional circumstances it may be permitted for a nominee to act as a lead or co-supervisor without meeting all of the above criteria. Below is a list of circumstances in which a supervisor can be nominated for approval by the Research Progress and Awards Sub Panel:

  • Not qualified to the appropriate level
  • Probationary member of staff or one less experienced in research
  • Honorary member of staff
  • Emeritus Professor
  • Recognised supervisor
  • External supervisor

The Code of Practice on Supervision and Monitoring Progress of Postgraduate Researchers contains full details on the circumstances under which approval must be sought.

In order to apply under one of the above categories, the Supervisor Approval form (Word - 30KB) should be completed and signed off by the Head of School (or nominee) and returned to Research Student Administration.
