Train Travel

The main campus is directly served by its own rail station, called University. Just eight minutes’ journey from New Street, the station makes the train a quick and convenient travel option from across the West Midlands and beyond. For all timetable information visit National Rail or check live departures from University on the campus map app.

Student Tickets and Passes

For train travel and other public transport across the West Midlands, take a student pass from Transport for West Midlands. These are best for students wanting to travel regularly to a range of locations in their chosen zones.

West Midlands Railway operates local services to University station and offer student season tickets between two specific stations on their lines. These offer excellent value for students who only want to travel to and from campus and who will not go anywhere else regularly.

For train travel nationwide, young people aged 16-25 and full-time students over 26 get discounted travel on one-off journeys with a 16-25 railcard. There is also a 26-30 Railcard.

Season tickets for long distance journeys are available from the company operating your route or the ticket office at your origin station. Use the season ticket calculator to find the best option for you. Please get in touch if you would like further advice.

Season Ticket Loans for Staff

University of Birmingham staff benefit from an interest free loan for their Swift season ticket.
