Don't let someone steal your ride. Keep your bike safe by attaching the frame securely to a bike rack with a good quality D-lock. Better still, keep it in one of our lockable bike shelters or hire a locker.
Bike shelters and lockers
There are four lockable bike shelters on campus available to staff and students:
For instructions on accessing these shelters, please email sustainabletravel@contacts.bham.ac.uk from your University email address. There is also a compound in the Sport and Fitness Centre car park. Sport & Fitness members can access this using their swipe card.
If you are based at one of our accommodation villages, you’ll find lockable bike stores at The Vale and Selly Oak Village. These are managed by the Student Living team, so you'll need to drop into Shackleton reception (for The Vale Village) or Jarratt Hall reception (for Jarratt Hall and Bournbrook) for access information.
You can hire one of our 42 bike lockers around campus for £4 a month. If you are interested in hiring a locker, please email sustainabletravel@contacts.bham.ac.uk or complete our online form.

Locking your bike
Crime is generally low on campus. However, bikes are a prime target for opportunistic thieves. You can prevent unwanted attention by following some quick and easy steps.
Whenever you lock your bike:
- Choose a rack that is visible by passersby or CCTV
- Use a strong D-lock to attach your frame to the rack
- Invest in a lock that is 25% the value of your bike
- Use a secondary lock to loop through the wheels
- Take stealable lights and panniers away with you
You can hire a heavy-duty D-lock or chain lock for £1 per month. These locks are manufactured by Kryptonite and come with a 10/10 security rating. You can attach it wherever you lock your bike on campus to maximise its security.
Students can get a free D-lock from the Community Safety Hub at North Lodge, as a well as free property marking as part of the University's 'Lock It, Mark It' scheme. Staff can also pick up a discounted D-lock from here for £15 or buy one from our campus cycle shop.
