Travelling by car

While we encourage you to leave your car at home, we understand there may be times when you need to drive to and from campus, especially if you're a commuter student or have accessibility needs.

We recommend hiring a car through our Enterprise Car Club or applying for a student parking permit if you're a regular car user.

Hire a car on campus

Perfect for infrequent car trips, our Enterprise Car Club lets you hire a car as and when you need it from £6 per month.

Apply for a permit

You'll need a student parking permit to park on campus, including at our student accommodation villages.

Where to park

Parking is limited on campus, especially if you don't have a permit. All students can enjoy out-of-hours parking though.

Frequently asked questions

I have a new or temporary car. Can I still use my student permit?

If you have a student permit it will be registered to the car registration number you provided us with. If you have a new vehicle, please complete our car amendment form.

If you have a courtesy car or temporary vehicle, please email the registration number and an estimate of how long you will have the vehicle to carparking@contacts.bham.ac.uk

I have a Blue Badge. Can I park for free?

Yes – Blue Badge holders have access to all accessible bays on campus free of charge, so long as you display your badge alongside your student permit. Failure to display your Blue Badge may result in a Parking Charge Notice being issued.

Find out more about where you can and can't park and your responsibilities as a Blue Badge holder at GOV.UK.

Where can visitors park?

If you have a friend or family member come to visit, they can park in North East Multi-storey Car Park (Pritchatts Road, B15 2SA).

There are five floors in total, however, the ground floor is reserved for Edgbaston Park Hotel guest parking only. EV charging stations can be found on roof level. Please note that this car park does not have a lift.

Your visitor can park here for up to ten hours. Parking charges apply Monday to Sunday, between 8am and 6pm. This includes bank holidays and University Closed Days.

Charges start from £3.40 and are capped at £10 (as of October 2024) Monday to Friday. If parking at the weekend or on a bank holiday, they will be charged a flat day rate of £2.50.

Payments can be made through RingGo (location 15677) or via the payment machines on floors one to five.

Visitors can also park at Shackleton and Tennis Court at The Vale Village and at Pritchatts Park Village. The RingGo code for visitors in these areas is 15677.

I have received a Parking Charge Notice. What do I do?

You will need to pay £60 within 28 days of receiving it to ensure you don't get fined further or taken to court. Please see our Parking Charge Notice page for more information on paying and what to do if you think you've been given a Parking Charge Notice by mistake.

Where can I charge my electric vehicle?

You can use the charging points on the roof level of North East Multi-storey Car Park (Pritchatts Road) between 8am and 6pm.

Outside of these hours, and at the weekend, you can find EV chargers at the Running Track Car Park, which is opposite the Teaching and Learning Building.
