Active Assignment – a job you are currently working in and are being paid for completing.

Assignment - details of the job(s) you undertake within the new system.

Core Systems - the University of Birmingham’s internal, cloud-based system for the management of Finance, HR, Payroll, and Research Grant Management processes. The system is accessed by via ‘single-sign on’ using University credentials (username and password) and is therefore not a publicly accessible system.

Hiring Manager – the person responsible for overseeing your employment and who will set your working hours. This person would be your first point of call for any queries relating to your job.

Inactive Assignment – a job that you have worked in previously that has now ended. If all of your casual assignments are inactive you will no longer have Core access.

Joiners Form – if you are a new employee and have not previously worked at University of Birmingham you will need to complete this form to provide your personal details so they can be added to the HR and payroll systems.

Masters Degree – once you have completed a Bachelors honours degree, you can go on to study for second qualification, known as a Masters. This is usually for one year.

Remote Access – allows you to access Core Systems off campus.

Right to Work Check – a legal requirement to prove that you are eligible to work in the UK. This requires providing certain documents from a list compiled by the UK Government and must be conducted prior to you undertaking any work.

Eligibility to work in the UK candidate guidance

Single Sign On - ability to access multiple applications with one set of log in credentials.

Starter Declaration – a form to be completed when starting a new role to ensure you are placed on the correct tax code.

Tier 4 Visa/Student Visa – an endorsement that is added to a Government passport, which permits foreign students to study at a country's qualified educational institutions. The visa is normally in the form of a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP card).

Timecard – where you input the hours you have worked in order for them to be paid to you. There is a separate timecard for each week (the week runs from Monday to Sunday).

Undergraduate – someone who is studying their first degree. When you have completed your degree, you become a post-graduate.

Worklink Portal – an online tool where you can raise a query or request to the Worklink team. Once your query has been raised you are given a case number and a member of the Worklink team will respond. The Portal allows you to track the progress of your case, make any additional comments, liaise with the Worklink team member and, also, has the option for you to attach useful files.
