Where a Postgraduate Taught student doesn't meet the criteria for Fair Assessment Policy degree classification calculation

When calculating degree classifications using the [Calculate PGT 20/21 FAP Degree Classification] button in BIRMS ES02, if you encounter an error stating, "Postgraduate Taught student does not meet criteria for Fair Assessment Policy Calculation", the student will fall into one of the following categories:

  • student on a part-time programme who commenced their study in 2020/21 - the expectation would be that they shouldn't be in a position to complete in the current academic year
  • student on a full-time programme who commenced their study prior to 2020/21 - the expection would be that non-FAP (Fair Assessment Policy) regulations should apply

Actions to take:

If a degree classification should be calculated for the student, but they are not subject to the Fair Assessment Policy, then select an alternative degree classification calculation process such as:

  • [Calculate Degree Classification] for students not subject to Emergency Framework/FAP regulations; or
  • [Calculate 19/20 COVID PGT Degree Classification] for students subject to Emergency Framework regulations.

If the student is not yet in a position to complete, then:

  • select [Calculate FAP PGT ART] for students who are subject to FAP regulations and should proceed to dissertation; or
  • select [Calculate ART] for students who are not subject to FAP regulations; or
  • where an ART is not calculable, select and save the appropriate ART from the drop-down list.

However, there may be some students who do not conform to the calculation requirements, but are subject to FAP - some examples are:

  • student registered on a full-time programme who commenced their study in or prior to 2019/20, and have had a Leave of Absence;
  • student registered on a non-standard start date programme who commenced their study in 2019/20, but are subject to FAP;
  • student registered on a programme that is classed as part-time, who commenced their study in 2020/21, but are able to complete in 2020/21.

In these cases, contact birmsteam@contacts.bham.ac.uk providing details of the student(s) and programme for advice on how to proceed.
